         LAKE CHARLES GATORMAN TRIATHLON GUIDELINES

Welcome to the 11th annual race, all sponsored by Dr. Rita Rae Fontenot “ The Foot Doctor.”  We hope you enjoy the race and want to come back each year.  Be sure to express your appreciation to her.  Some changes have been made for the USA Triathlon National Sprint Championships in 2003 and 2004, more waves have been added.  There is no elite wave for the championship races; everyone must race in their respective age group wave.

  1. Race Site:

    • West seawall of the Lake Charles Civic Center
Corner of Lakeshore Dr and Broad
  2. Parking:

    • Large parking lots on the north and south side of the Civic Center.

    • The roadways around the race site will be blocked.

  3. Body Marking:

    • Each competitor will have their number on each arm and leg, plus on the left calf will be placed which division you are racing.
    • An “H” for heavyweight, a “X” for relay, or your age for age division.
    • You must have your race number with you in order to be marked.
    • Marking begins at 6:30am.
  4. Transition Area:

    • Large steel fenced area with sturdy bicycle racks opens at 6am.
    • You rack your bike according to your swim wave; signs will be hanging on the ends directing you, which racks are for which wave.
    • These are the strongest racks ever and you will damage your bike before you damage these racks.
    • No assigned spots, only by wave.
  5. Swim:

    • 1000 meter, out and back course.
    • Water is salty.
    • Water temperature will be announced prior to race.
    • Orange buoys stay on your left.
    • You must wear the swim cap we provide you.
    • Swim caps are colored for a particular wave.
If your swim cap does not match everyone else’s then find out why.
    • Your starting time in the computer must be checked if your swim cap is different.
    • We have to have swimmer count in and out of the water, please be patient.
    • First swim wave starts at 8am with a musket gun blast, then every 5 minutes afterwards.
    • NO DIVING, this is a safety hazard and could get you DQ!
    • You must start in your assigned swim wave, jumping into an earlier wave is the same as cutting the course and will get you DQ’d.
    • Exit on steps, then up into transition area.
    • If you have wetsuit on covering up your number then yell out your number to the timers.

  6.  Bike:

    • No biking in the transition area.
    • Helmets must be on head and securely fastened before moving bicycle.
    • Each bicycle shall have mounted on top frame tube your sticky race number. We must be able to see your bike number due to this being a 3-lap course.
      NO DRAFTING ALLOWED
      .
    •  Don’t be accused of blocking, always stay to the right.
    • Since this is a 3-lap course, most everyone will be caught by faster riders coming from behind. Passing only on the left is allowed. The course is flat and fast.
Everyone is to make 3 laps
      .
    • The course goes behind the Civic Center, through downtown, then south further into town, then everyone will be making an u-turn, then heading back toward the downtown area and alongside the interstate, under the bridge and back to the Civic Center.
    • Since we are going through a residential area, be wary of anyone that may stray onto the course.
    • Police will be at each intersection monitoring traffic.
    • When coming back to the transition site, you must dismount your bike before entering.

  7. Run:

    • 6K course
      Everyone makes 2 laps
      .
    • The course is along the residential southern end of the lake then loops back into the downtown area.
    • Water stations at the start, and at a corner where everyone will be hitting it both ways each lap, and then at the finish you will be handed a cold Powerade.
    • You must have your paper race number with you, please wear it in front.

  8.  Food:

    • Plenty of food and drink afterwards.

    • Everyone including spectators are invited to eat.

    •  Eat as much as you want, I don’t want that much leftovers.

  9. Door Prizes:

    • You snooze, you lose!
    • There will plenty of prizes, cash and merchandise, given away randomly.
    •  I do not know what Dr. Fontenot will be giving away; she keeps that secret to herself.
    • This will keep your interest up while we are doing results.
  10. Results:

    • We will be tabulating them as fast as we can, please do not disturb us.
    • Any penalties given out by the officials are final and cannot protested.
    • The results with splits will be posted on the website and mailed out ASAP.
    • Timing is being done by Championchip.
    • Be sure to turn in your chip at the end of the race.
  11. Sports Massage:

    • Everyone is entitled to a free sports after the race.
    • First come, first serve.
    • There will be several therapists and instructors from the Louisiana Institute of Massage Therapy to soothe your muscles.
